Energy policies and initiatives

Managing the energy needs of Australia's fastest growing, most decentralised and energy-intensive state at a time of increasing international competition and concerns over climate change represents one of the most significant combined challenges for government, business and the community.

Energy in various forms powers the state's electricity generation, manufacturing, transport and mining industries, commercial sectors and Queensland's homes. More people, more air-conditioners, more industry and development across the state means Queensland's energy needs will continue to rise.

The Queensland Government is planning now for future energy challenges, investing in new energy infrastructure development, making better use of existing infrastructure, and developing more efficient and cleaner technologies and diverse energy sources.

Through policy development and continual strengthening of relationships with Government-owned and private energy industry participants, the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) is helping manage:

  • how Queensland generates its energy
  • how we distribute sufficient, reliable and cost-competitive energy to consumers
  • developing the state's gas industry, ensuring a diversity of sources for Queensland´s energy needs and reducing greenhouse gas emissions
  • the significant role Queensland can play in the growing national energy market.
