Gas retailers

Queensland's natural gas industry opened to full retail competition in July 2007. This means householders and small businesses (other than those located in Roma and Dalby) are able to choose their natural gas retailer.

The Queensland Competition Authority monitors the activities of retailers in Queensland´s electricity and gas markets.

Retailers buy gas in the wholesale market and sell it to individual customers. Your retailer will bill you directly for the gas you use. The amount you pay includes the cost of transporting the gas along your distributor's gas pipelines to your property.

Please contact your retailer if you have questions about any of the following:

  • your contract, bill or the prices you pay
  • payment options
  • disconnection or reconnection.

Only companies licensed by the Queensland Government may sell you gas.

Retailers will decide which areas they target for new customers, so depending on where you live, gas retailers may offer you a lower price, improved retail services or other benefits to win your business.

Gas retail prices

Since the introduction of full retail competition, the price of reticulated natural gas in Queensland has been deregulated. This means retailers are responsible for setting prices for their customers.

The final price paid by gas customers includes a range of different costs, including:

  • the cost of the gas
  • the cost of transporting the gas along transmission and distribution pipelines to individual customers
  • retail costs.

Each gas retailer is also required to advise the QCA of any future change in the prices for its small customers on standard contracts and publish the new prices on its website.

Also, if the change is an increase in prices, the Gas Supply Act 2003 states that the retailer must:

  • publish a notice on its website at least 10 business days before the new price takes effect
  • send the price notice to affected small customers with their next bill.
