EIS status: EIS complete
Tarong Energy Corporation Limited is proposing to construct new ash storage facilities to service both the Tarong and Tarong North Power Stations. Current storage is expected to be exhausted by 2008.
Both power stations are located on a 1500 hectare site, 12.5 kilometres south-east of Nanango in the south-Burnett region of Queensland, and have a combined generating capacity of 1845 mega watts.
The proposed project has been divided into two stages based on the need and timing for future long-term ash storage:
On 29 November 2005 the Coordinator-General declared the Tarong Northern Land Ash Emplacement Project a 'significant project' for which an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was required in accordance with Part 4 of the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971 (Qld).
Whilst the total project has been declared a 'significant project', an environmental assessment has been prepared only for Stage 1 at this point of time. Tarong Energy Corporation’s EIS was publicly released on 17 November 2006. The public submission period closed on 18 December 2006.
The Coordinator-General has completed his evaluation of the EIS and recommended on 13 November 2007 that the project can proceed subject to specific conditions. A copy of the Coordinator-General’s Report may be viewed and downloaded using the following link:
