Supplementary EIS

If a ‘significant project’ has the potential to cause environmental, social or economic impacts, the project proponent must prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS).

After evaluating the EIS and submissions made on the EIS, the Coordinator-General may ask the project proponent to prepare a supplementary EIS.

Outline of supplementary EIS

A supplementary EIS could include:

  • corrections, clarification and further information to that provided in the EIS - as requested in state government advisory agency and public submissions
  • results from additional studies requested by advisory agencies or the Coordinator-General.

Public consultation

Normally, the supplementary EIS is not released for public comment.

However, if the issues are of significant public interest or public input is warranted, the Coordinator-General may require public consultation on the supplementary EIS - similar to that which occurred for the EIS.

Otherwise, copies of the supplementary EIS are provided to all the agencies and individuals who made submissions on the EIS - for their information only.

Advisory agency input

Regardless of whether public consultation occurs, advisory agencies are invited to:

  • comment on the adequacy of the supplementary EIS in addressing matters raised in their submissions on the EIS
  • propose conditions for the Coordinator-General’s consideration in preparing his report on the EIS (including the supplementary EIS).
