Social impact management plan

After assessing the project's social impacts, the project proponent is required to prepare a social impact management plan.

The plan - which applies to the construction, commissioning, operation and the decommissioning of the project - describes:

  • the project's potential (positive and negative) impacts
  • mitigation and management strategies
  • implementation actions
  • roles and responsibilities of proponents, government, service providers and communities.

Among the social impacts and other issues the plan addresses are:

  • stakeholder engagement
  • workforce (training and employment)
  • worker accommodation and housing
  • local industry participation
  • health and community services.

The plan should be developed in consultation with government and community stakeholders.

Guideline

For more information, read the Guideline to preparing a social impact management plan  (PDF, 186 KB).

Submitting the plan

Ideally, proponents should submit a draft of the social impact management plan (with the EIS) to the department, prior to the public consultation period.

A subsequent draft of the plan - reflecting the outcomes of consultation with the state government - should then be submitted with the final EIS.
