In 2010 the state government commissioned the Whitsunday, Hinterland and Mackay (WHAM) Industrial Land Demand Study.
The aim of the study was to identify the existing supply and future demand for industrial land in the WHAM Region. (This region has since been renamed the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday Region.)
The study found that, under a medium-growth scenario, there is sufficient industrial land supply across the region to service future demand.
However, most of this demand would be generated in Mackay rather than in the hinterland, where the supply is ample.
The study concluded that an additional 500 ha of industrial land would be required in Mackay up to 2031, reflecting its status as the region’s major population and service centre.
Future demand for industrial land at Bowen (and possibly Mackay) would be heavily influenced by the rate of development at the Abbott Point State Development Area, the report stated.
