Application (including initial advice statement)

In seeking to have an infrastructure project declared 'significant', project proponents must apply to the Coordinator-General in writing.

The application must include an initial advice statement (IAS) and the relevant fee.

Outline of IAS

The IAS is a scoping document that provides information on the:

  • size and nature of the proposed project
  • environment in and around the project location
  • project's potential environmental impacts
  • possible measures to mitigate any adverse impacts.

The IAS helps the Coordinator-General determine whether the project in question should be declared 'significant'.

The document informs the draft terms of reference for the environmental impact statement (EIS) (assuming the project is declared a 'significant project for which an EIS is required').

Guideline

For more information, read the Guideline for preparing an initial advice statement (PDF, 73 KB).

Public document

If and when the project is declared 'significant', the IAS becomes a public document. It should therefore not contain any confidential information.

The IAS remains the key source of public information regarding the project proposal until the EIS is released.

Fees

Applications to have a project declared significant by the Coordinator-General are subject to fees.

Contact the department

Project proponents should contact the department prior to lodging their IAS.

Signed information declaration

As well as the IAS, project proponents are required to provide the Coordinator-General with a signed information declaration acknowledging the requirements of either section 26(1)(a) or section 26(1)(b) of the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971.

The department will provide the proponent with the declaration to sign after the IAS is lodged.
