Increased stake

In June 2010 Vale raised its ownership in the Belvedere coal mine from 51% to 75.5% with the purchase of a stake held by AMCI Investments.

Coal seam gas

The coal seams in question have a high gas content. Belvedere Joint Venture intends to commercially extract the gas, at the same time making the seams safe to mine.
